A truly funny adventure novel filled with memorable characters that leap off the page.
In the early 1980s, the price of gold is sky high and the chances of finding a decent job are at rock bottom. Two footloose hitchhikers, Johnny Reznick and Tony Mesko, convince recent college grad Rick Rafferty that the three of them can strike it rich out in the Northern California gold country. They load up Rick’s battered ’74 Chevy with shovels and pails and a few twelve-packs and leave Cleveland, bound for the Golden State.
But gold proves to be remarkably difficult to find.
Eventually, they establish a camp on a creek south of the old Malakoff Diggins, one of the richest strikes in history. They share the creek with a motley handful of outlaws, including a pistol-packing old drifter who calls himself Smoky Moe and a couple of ex-cons who go by the names of Coonass and Snatch. And then there are the nudists who come around on the weekends to flaunt their tanned bodies in front of poor, bedraggled gold miners.
As the scorching summer wears on, the trickle of gold dust that the Clevelanders are able to find is barely enough to keep them alive. Finally, their persistence pays off when they discover a forgotten stash of gold more than a century old.
But keeping gold proves to be just as difficult as finding it.
